This new community was sternly tested during
the war years from 1939 - 1945 when the district
suffered heavy damage on numerous occasions
from German bombing.
The most destructive incident of the blitz
occurred on the night of 16/17 April 1941
when a single parachute mine in King Harold's
Way damaged 1,072 properties.
