In 1966 Deputy Mayor, Councellor Mrs M Barron, ceremoniously smashed the window of Hedley Mitchell's store to mark the commencement of the demolition of Erith Town Centre to make way for redevelopment.

As a consequence, all the existing Victorian buildings were lost.
