Croydon Road Recreation Ground, Beckenham, 2005 Contributed by Terry Guntrip
Recreation grounds suited a variety of purposes and the one in Croydon Road opened in 1891 complete with bandstand and an ornate water fountain (right - click to enlarge) which, regrettably, was demolished.
Popular for both informal leisure and celebrating important occasions, the park continues to fulfil an important function.
As
Beckenham turned from village to town, the
recreational needs of the population changed.
The traditional rural pastimes of cricket
and racing became difficult as more land was
covered by houses and it became necessary
to set aside designated places for leisure
activities.
