The church suffered a huge fire in 1989 during
preparations for its 125th anniversary, but
was subsequently rebuilt in the original style.
Opening
in 1865 to the design of Architect George
Barnes and serving the Bickley Park estate
then being developed by George Wythes, St
George's was an imposing structure in a high
Gothic style that reflected the confidence
of the building going on around it.
The spire was found to be unsafe about 1904
and was rebuilt by Ernest Newton, an architect
then very much in vogue, in a plainer style.
