Westerham
Road,
Biggin Hill, Bromley, c.1925

This view, which looks south, shows the new Black Horse, built in 1908. In front of it is a sign advertising plots of land for sale on the Aperfield Court Estate, a characteristic of the area in the early 20th century. The sign is on the site of two recently demolished thatched cottages. To the left is the war memorial, which was unveiled in 1923.

The
junction of Westerham Road
(later Main Road) with Jail
Road was the historic centre
of Biggin Hill.
The absence
of a parish church (the
area was in the parish of
Cudham) meant that the Black
Horse Inn was the focus for
village life.
