East Street, Bromley, 1869

|
|
Although
leading directly off the Market Square, this
area, historically known as the cage field,
was not developed until the 1860s.
Here just the first phase is complete including
the drill hall on the right and the mission
hall on the left.
Initially residential, after 1878 it became
the main approach to the North Station and
took on a more commercial aspect.
Note the tower of the Victorian town hall
in the distance.
Many of the buildings survive and are in use
as small independent shops currently marketed
by the council as 'Bromley North Village'.
The drill hall is now a pub.
