Water Tower, Summer Hill,
Chislehurst, c. 1960

Already a severe bottleneck on what had long since become the main road to Bromley, both problems were solved in 1963 by demolition - despite a late campaign to save it.

Although
built as a store for water, being on the top
of Summer Hill, the Water Tower was also designed
to be the grand entrance to George Wythes'
Bickley Park estate. The building also contained
two flats.
Erected about 1860, by the time this picture
was taken 100 years later, the building had
deteriorated and was soon declared unfit for
habitation. |
