This view looks south along High Street and the top of the steeple of the of the church of st Mary the Virgin can just be seen above the tree.

This view dates from just after Downe, by virtue of its inclusion in the Green Belt, was saved from one of its greatest threats: transformation into a residential suburb, but just before a more arbitrary one: enemy bombing.

The tension of the rural: the Post Office also doubles as a corn dealer, and the suburban: an advertisement for the latest Hollywood film at Bromley Odeon, is evident.
