Ennerdale, Grosvenor Road, West Wickham, c. 1927

Two views of Ennerdale in Grosvenor Road.

1. One of the town's few attempts to develop following the arrival of the railway in 1882, was the speculatively built Grovesnor Road, south of the High Street.

'Ennerdale', pictured here, was the home of Joseph Bowman, a West India merchant, for many years.

2. In the twenties Frederick Rickwood owned land opposite the house consisting of an orchard, shown in the foreground, and a garden that stretched back to the High Street.

The garden of Ennerdale, therefore, was opposite rather than behind the house. The garden was lost once suburbanisation began in ernest in the late twenties.
