Parts of Abbey Wood are in the Borough of Bexley

Tram Terminus, Abbey Wood, c. 1908

The tram route to Abbey Wood opened in 1908, taking the London County Council tram service right to the boundary of the County of Kent.

The new service was a great advantage for Abbey Wood residents who worked in Woolwich, but a mixed blessing at bank Holidays when crowds poured into Abbey Wood on special cheap tickets to enjoy the woods and the heath.

Locals complained of the damage caused by these one day visitors.
