In
1869 Eltham was predominantly rural surrounded
by fields with the large woodland areas of
Shooters Hill dominating the areas to the
east and north east.
The remains of Eltham's medieval palace (Eltham
Court) can be seen to the south west of the
High Street (seen in the centre of the picture),
running through two of the former hunting
parks, the Great Park at Eltham Lodge, and
Middle Park.
The Dartford Loop railway line and Eltham
(now Mottingham) Station are to the south.
The arrival of the railway was a spur to suburban
development in Eltham.
