New Eltham grew up as a suburb of farmland to the south of Eltham in and around the small hamlet and crossroads of Pope's Street.

This is a 1920s postcard view looking towards Green Lane from the junction with Gerda Road.

Note the tile-hung decoration to bay window and the ornamental brick pediment over the front door, features that embelished the medium to large semi detached houses built at this time.
