Map of Lambeth and the surrounding area from Cary's 'Actual Survey of the Country Fifteen Miles round London', showing the main roads following the line of the old Roman roads running south from London through Lambeth to Chichester and Brighton.

The mainly rural nature of the area covered shows Streatham, Clapham and Dulwich and their commons as hamlets, with few houses mainly by the roadside or in clusters nearby.
