Aerial Photograph of Waterloo, 1936

Aerial Photograph of Waterloo, 1936

The area of industrial buildings and wharves above County Hall, the main offices of the London County Council and then the Greater London Council until 1986, was to be destroyed during the war and provided the site for the Festival of Britain Exhibition in 1951. This site, which includes the Festivl Hall, later became the South Bank Arts complex and Jubilee Gardens.

This photograph is centred on Waterloo Station. It was enlarged in stages and by 1922 had 21 platforms and a new frontage dedicated as a war memorial.

Notable buildings in the area include the General Lying In Hospital for women in York Road built in 1828; the Royal Waterloo Hospital for children built in 1905; and the Old Vic, which had been enlarged in 1880 as the Royal Victoria Coffee Music Hall by Emma Cons.

The present Waterloo Bridge under construction with a temporary bridge just downstream.

Also visible is The Cut, once the home of one of London's biggest and best known street markets.
