Norwood Road, Tulse Hill, c. 1794

Norwood Road, Tulse Hill, c. 1794
Considered to have been engraved by R. Laurie from a drawing by J. Dillon, c.1794.

An early illustration entitled 'On Norwood Road in Surrey'.

It is hard to envisage todays busy road running south from Herne Hill as being more of a dirt track than a lane leading from the Tulse Hill tavern to Herne Hill.

The area was reknowned for its gipsies, who had left by the end of the 18th century, and Norwood became a village of scattered houses around a large common of woodland and oak trees.
