Norwood Road, Tulse Hill, c. 1794

Considered to have been engraved
by R. Laurie from a drawing by J. Dillon,
c.1794.

|
An
early illustration entitled 'On Norwood Road
in Surrey'.
It is hard to envisage todays busy road running
south from Herne Hill as being more of a dirt
track than a lane leading from the Tulse Hill
tavern to Herne Hill.
The area was reknowned for its gipsies, who
had left by the end of the 18th century, and
Norwood became a village of scattered houses
around a large common of woodland and oak
trees. |
