This process was encouraged by the arrival of the railway - its route is in a cutting evidenced by the gap in the left hand range of buildings - which arrived in 1849.

 

This view looks south along Blackheath Village.

The commercial centre of Blackheath developed in the early and mid-19th century when the area was expanding as a proper suburb.
