By 1842 the first stage in the development of Deptford New Town was complete.

The earliest houses were mostly close to Deptford Broadway, and here the street names (Nelson, Nile, Victory) recall the first years of the nineteenth century.

The builders had moved southwards in the 1820s and '30s. In 1842 Samuel Shepherd's market garden (plot 345) and the grounds of Comical House, now Stone House, blocked their further advance towards Lewisham.
