Tinderbox Row, Deptford High Street, Deptford, 1841

Tinderbox Row, Deptford High Street, Deptford, 1841
Print of a watercolour by an unknown artist, 1841

181 - 195 Hamilton Place now occupy the site.

Deptford High Street was called Butt Lane until 1825.

Church Street was the shopping centre of Deptford in the eighteenth century, while Butt Lane was residential or agricultural, but the large houses here were better adapted to the expansion of Victorian retailing.

This illustration shows Tinderbox Row, fourteen timber houses built c.1700, probably with dockyard workers in mind.

They were demolished in 1843, when the opening of the station prompted the owners to build on the garden ground behind.
