Downham Estate Under Construction, Downham, Lewisham, c.1926

Downham Estate Under Construction, Downham, Lewisham, c.1926

The Downham Estate was developed by the London County Council from 1924.

The main contractor was Holland and Cubitt.

The estate's unusual size - 7000 houses - presented the builders with significant logistical problems. Part of the solution was a temporary railway from nearby Grove Park station to the site on which to transport materials.
