The name 'Forest Hill' originally applied only to the northern three quarters of Honor Oak Road. It is seen here when the development was just a decade old.

The modern centre of the suburb, around the station, was then part of Sydenham Common. Perry Slough was a separate settlement cut off from 'Forest Hill' by the open heath land.
