Hither Green Lane, the area's only road until the 19th century, was still rural in parts when this photograph was taken in the 1880s. The fields to the right were part of North Park Farm.

Development accelerated after the opening of Hither Green Station in 1895, when Cameron Corbett bought the farm as the site of his great St Germans Estate.
