In the distance on the right is the tower of St Mary's Church, and on the left the spire of Lewisham Congregational Church, built in 1871. The Mid Kent Railway, built in 1857, is seen dividing the fields (at the time used by the Lewisham Cricket Club) from the houses.

This view looks south-east from Vicar's Hill across Lewisham.

The fields in the foreground were developed as suburban villas by the builder Jerrard in the late 1890s.
