Winter Garden at The Firs,
Lee, c. 1885

|
|
The
Firs was a country house, built about 1700.
In 1884 Thomas Sanders was appointed gardner
there and created this winter garden.
It became famous for its rich but informal
effect and was visited by many gardners.
In 1887 Sanders left to edit Amateur Gardening,
and by 1894 the Firs was demol-ished and the
garden built over.
