The Black Bull, Lewisham High Street, Lewisham, c. 1875

The Black Bull, Lewisham High Street, Lewisham, c. 1875

This is one of the old High Street mansions that one-by-one succumbed to the residential, commercial and, in this case, administative developments demanded by the growing town. Lewisham House was sacrificed in 1893 to the needs of a fire and police station, mortuary and a Coroner's Court.

One of Lewisham House's previous functions was that of a private school. Note the wide pavement and horse's drinking trough.

While for many the principal interest in this view is the Black Bull public house (now the Fox and Firkin), of more significance is Lewisham House, the stately dormered building, partly obscured by trees, at the junction of Lewisham High Street and Ladywell Road.
