
Some evidence of the time of year is provided by the fact that most people in this photograph are wearing coats, but bunches of grapes are available from the stall. Unlike today's all-year-round availability, fruit was - until the 1970s - strictly seasonal, and this photograph would have been taken in early autumn.
The stalls occupy the same position as today on the west side of the wider part of the High Street. |
