Hatcham House was also known as Hatcham Park. The house dated from the middle of the 18th century, but the moat that surrounded it showed that it was on the site of a much older building. It was the home of Joeph Hardcastle, an important campaigner for the abolition of slavery.

The building of the nearby railway made life disagreeable to Hardcastle's successors and they sold the lease of the house to the Haberdashers' Company, which redeveloped the site.

The house was between the modern Egmont Street and Billington Road.
