The Haberdashers' Company, one of the city livery companies, developed their lands in New Cross in the last quarter of the 19th century.

The development consisted of large semi-detached houses aimed at the upper end of the the market for commuters who were able to take advantage of train services to London from the nearby New Cross stations.
