Beckenham Place, Southend, c. 1821

Beckenham Place, the manor house of Beckenham (though a boundary change has now placed it in Lewisham) was probably built for John Cator in the 1770s.

Cator, a timber merchant, had bought the manor from the St.John's, Viscounts Bolingbroke.

The very different wing and portico were brought here in the 1780s or a little later from Wricklemarsh House, Blackheath, which Cator had bought and demolished.

The mansion is now the central feature of a large park and golf course.
