Perry's Farm Watercress Beds, Southend, Lewisham, c. 1900

The Ravensbourne River provided fertile ground right up to the 1930s when most of the open ground to the north and east was taken up for housing.

Southend and the lands to the south towards Beckenham, however, enjoy considerable open land in the form of playing fields, golf courses and parks to this day.
