The Green Man (one of the old Southend pubs) had been rebuilt as seen here c.1860. It was soon to be rebuilt once again on a huge scale.

The extension of tram services from Catford to Southend in 1914 was a major event in the history of the village, opening up its country pleasures to far more visitors, and making it a possible place of residence for commuters of modest means.
