Herne Hill is an extension of Denmark Hill northwards and continues Denmark Hill's social elevation, whose most famous resident was the art critic and writer, John Ruskin.

This group of villas is a puzzle as no plot on any map of the time corresponds with the view.

The distinctly different styles encompass most forms of architectural taste of the day.
