Hopton Street, Borough, 1977

Hopton Street, Borough, 1977

In the foreground, paper merchants supported the extensive printing industry which, in Hopton Street, included Sir Joseph Causton & Sons Ltd.

Bankside became increasingly industrial as the 19th century progressed and the work it provided was an important factor behind population growth at that time.

This view shows two dominant activities. In the background is Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's power station, built in 1957 to 1960 on the site of an earlier station, and before that a gas works.
