Butler's Wharf, Bermondsey, c. 1915

Employment was a major factor in suburbanisation and the Thames wharves provided casual work for many.

The two most prominent wharfingers in Bermondsey were the Hay's Wharf Company and Butler's Wharf.

The latter occupied virtually the whole riverfront down-stream from Tower Bridge to St. Saviour's Dock.
