Southwark Park Road, Bermondsey, Southwark, c.1910

Southwark Park Road, Bermondsey, Southwark, c.1910

This view looks west along Southwark Park Road from its junction with Galleywall Road. A. P. Plowman, linen draper, is on the left.

Southwark Park Road was Bermondsey and Rotherhithe's main shopping street and is still commercially very active today.

The photograph was taken by the South Metropolitan Gas Company and published in their journal Co-partnership. It was taken to promote the quality of the street lighting they provided, an initiative probably prompted by the increasing threat of electric lights.
