The Sunray Estate was built by the Camberwell
Borough Council in the early 1920s, on land
held on a 200 year lease from the Dulwich
Estate.
Previously the land had been the grounds of
Casino House.
The Dulwich Estate was 'encouraged' to make
the lease following threats by the CBC to
use compulsory purchase powers it had gained
in the 1919 Housing Act.
The estate was designed on garden principles
by Edwin Hall, architect of Eltham's Progress
Estate.
The church in the background in the first
photograph is St Faith's, built for the estate's
new residents.
