Lordship Lane, Dulwich, Southwark, c.1905

Lordship Lane, Dulwich, Southwark, c.1905

St. Peter's Church, seen in background, dates from 1869.

Lordship Lane is an ancient thoroughfare through Dulwich, which also forms the boundary of the Dulwich (College) Estate to its west. It is also East Dulwich's main shopping street.

East Dulwich developed rapidly as a fairly intensive residential area in the 1870s, while building on the Dulwich Estate was much more paced and spacious.

The compact group of shops on the left contrast with the larger detached houses, hidden behind the trees opposite them.
