Honor Oak Sports Ground, Nunhead, Southwark, 1983

Sports clubs, such as Honor Oak Cricket and Lawn Tennis club, (founded in 1866), Blackheath Harriers (founded in 1869 in Peckham as Peckham Hare and Hounds), have formed an important feature of suburban life. They provide a social bond to new settlers and a release of physical energy from sedentary work.

Honor Oak and One tree Hill were preserved as open spaces after a response to attempts to enclose and develop them in the late 1890s.

This view shows the adjacent playing fields and, incongruously, the Chapel to Camberwell New Cemetery.
