Peckham, especially the area near the Old
Kent Road, was much more than a dormitory
suburb. It had much manufacturing and in the
case of the gas works, much of the produce
was destined for a local market.
The South Metropolitan Gas Company was managed
by George Livesey, who was an active philanthropist.
Note the extraordinary size of the coal loaders' shovel
blades!
