Peckham High Road, Peckham, Southwark, 1979

Peckham High Road, Peckham, Southwark, 1979

The balustraded building to the left was on the site of Brunswick Chapel, a non-conformist chapel which was founded in 1657.

This commercial scene betrays a townscape of considerable historic interest.

It shows 56 - 66 Peckham High Street, which is on its south side, just west of the junction with Rye Lane.

Of interest are the three properties behind Boltowns and Wimpy. These were part of a larger group of two pairs (now gone) to the left of the lower central pair and two pairs (one missing) to the right. The central pair have been dated to the 17th century and the outer pair to c.1720.

As such they are remarkable in their unusual survival (though much corrupted by their commercial appendages).
