Elmer Grange, Elmers End, Beckenham, c. 1930

Elmer Grange, Elmers End, Beckenham, c. 1930

Croydon Road was an early development and was lined with large houses.

Elmer Grange was the largest of all and was built in a unique style for Thomas Price, a retired Welsh tailor about 1880.

The house itself survived as flats until about 1980.

Originally called Lymore but renamed Elmer Grange c.1898, it was bought by the Landsberg family c.1918 who came to believe, perhaps because of the name, that it had a medieval priory at its core. This is almost certainly untrue, but explains the name of Priory Close being used when the grounds were being developed in the mid thirties.
