Five Bells, Bromley Common, c. 1950

Five Bells, Bromley Common, c. 1950

Probably established about 1860 by Henry Harris, as part of the development of Shooting Common that followed the arrival of the railway in 1858, this picture shows the conversion from the original cottage style public house at the front to the present day larger mock Tudor building behind.

The rebuild was begun before the war but may not have been completed until shortly afterwards.

It is likely that the original cottage predates the establishment of the pub, the east side of the common becoming built up immediately after enclosure in 1826.
