Although a typical suburban garden in appearance the house itself has a long history.

Dating from around 1724 it was the home of a succession of surgeons including the famous John Scott. By this date it had been adapted to the needs of a Victorian surgeon named Thomas Illot.

After World War I High Street houses and gardens became a luxury and in 1927 the National Provincial Bank opened a purpose built branch here.

Bank amalgamations and retrenchments in the 1990s resulted in its conversion to a pub.
