These cottages were typical of the area between the High Street and the mills of the Ravenbourne.

Many of the streets: Avenue Square, Romer Place and Engate Street, were built in the first half of the 19th century when the mills on the river provided nearby employment.

The houses were demolished after being damaged in the late 1930s, and the whole area was swept away when Molesworth Street was promoted as a by-pass for Lewisham High Street in the mid 1990s.
