The Bermondsey Leather trade was made up of numerous small firms and a small number of large ones.

The trade also generated three institutions: The Leather market of 1833 on Weston Street; Leather Sellers College of 1877 on Tower Bridge Road and the Leather Hide and Wool Exchange on Leather Market Street.

It was here that untanned hides were traded.
