Camberwell Green, Camberwell, c. 1900

camberwell-green-00671-350

A c.1900 handcoloured postcard of Camberwell Green, which forms the heart, if not the physical centre of the parish.

The Green was ancient common land bought by the Vestry in the late 19th century to protect it from development.

The Green is part of the crossroads junction of Camberwell Church Street, Camberwell Road, Camberwell New Road and Denmark Hill.

This view, looking east towards Church Street, reinforces its status as an important public transport hub. The tram line was electrified in 1903.
